The Seskarö way

The road to Seskarö is very scenic. Many small archipelago islands are connected by bridges, and the outermost of these islands is Seskarö.
Seskarö is a small island located at the northern end of the Bothnian bay, near the border with Finland. It is the only island with a permanent population. This is largely due to the sawmill that has operated on the island since 1892 and is still active. The sawmill is the heart of the island. Along with professional fishing and reindeer husbandry, it helps create a unique and vibrant island culture.

Here, people live and thrive by making use of everything the sea and nature have to offer. This fosters a strong sense of community and pride in both the island and its way of life.

Discover Seskarö – Where Nature and Culture Meet

1) Visit reindeer in their natural forest habitat
Experience the magical feeling of encountering reindeer in the forest of Seskarö, a place where history and nature intertwine. During the winter, reindeer often gather at feeding sites, giving us the opportunity to meet them up close in their natural surroundings. You’ll be treated to a warm berry drink made from local forest ingredients, and learn more about the lives of these remarkable animals. (As the reindeer roam freely in the forest, sightings cannot be guaranteed)

 2) Lunch at the old sawmill manager’s Villa

Enjoy a delicious lunch at Herrgår’n, the historic sawmill manager’s villa. The meal is prepared using local ingredients,
offering you a true taste of the region.During your visit, you’ll also gain insight into how the sawmill has shaped life on the island since 1892.

3) Ice Fishing on the frozen bay

Join us on the sea ice of the Bothnian Bay and take part in our fishing culture. A local fisherman will guide you, sharing stories from island life and offering tips for ice fishing. We’ll find the perfect spot, drill through the ice, and then it’s time to sit back, relax and wait. Ice fishing here is unlike anywhere else—set in the world’s only brackish-water archipelago, it’s a peaceful, nature-filled experience where every catch feels special.
